The game of Mahjong is the design inspiration for this facility. Mahjong requires four players to play, positioned based on the four directions. By shuffling the tiles in the centre of the table, a community is formed between the players. The tiles are then stacked and setup in a rhombus shape, within the square table. This setup is the inspiration behind the floor plan and the room adjacencies, while the four directions and the counter-clockwise order inspires the circulation pattern within the space.

The name “mahjong” is directly translated as “sparrow” in a dialect from southern China. This idea influences the biophilic design. Moreover, the organic and decorative drawings on each tile inspires the biophilia, the colours, and the finishes and materials. The overall design aesthetic is influenced by Chinese culture and Chinese architecture.
